Papers of Joseph Jones, member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, Continental Congressman, and jurist, collected by Worthington C. Ford. Papers include protests against British measures, particularly the Stamp Act; a proposal for militia regulation in Virginia; matters concerning the conduct of the Revolutionary War, including criticism of Britain's use of mercenary Indians; the work of Jones on the cession of frontier lands to the United States government; a copy of Meriwether Smith's plan for a new governmental structure; and a chronology of Benjamin Franklin's peace efforts with French minister Vergennes. Other papers relate to William Cocke's executorship of the estate of Continental Congressman Thomas Adams; a letter from economist Josiah Tucker to his publisher Thomas Cadell; two Noah Webster letters; and a letter describing the nation's response to President William H. Harrison's death.

Thomas Cadell (1742-1802) entered the London book trade in 1758 as an apprentice to Andrew Millar. He entered into partnership with Millar in 1765, and became the sole proprietor in 1767.
